Urban Transformation | Athens | May 26

Writers Durs Grunbein, Reiner Stach, Angie Saltambasi and Maria Topali - the former two German and the latter two Greek - will be holding a discussion on urban transformation and biographical writing at the Goethe Institute in Athens on Saturday, May 26. Admission to the event, which will be in German and Greek with simultaneous translation, is free of charge.

Joan Leigh Fermor | Athens | May 22 - October 21

The Benaki Museum presents a collection of photographs by Joan Leigh Fermor, the equally talented wife of the celebrated Irish travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor. Between the 1940s and 60s Joan took thousands of photographs of people and places as she traveled with Paddy around Greece, where the couple had settled in the village of Kardamyli in the southwestern Peloponnese.

Rachel Maclean | Athens | May 24

In partnership with the State of Concept gallery, the British Council presents a screening of Rachel Maclean's film "Feed Me," which explores the commercialization of childhood. The Glasgow-based multimedia artist will also talk about the project. The event takes place at the Benaki Museum's flagship venue, starting at 7 p.m.

New Varotsos Piece | Athens | To September 30

A new piece is being unveiled at "Costas Varotsos: The Sculpture Poet," a show on the cutting-edge Greek artist whose emblematic steel and glass sculptures feature in different parts of Europe and the United States, and include "The Runner" outside the Athens Hilton Hotel. Opening hours are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily and admission costs 7 euros.

With the 162 pieces of pencil, ink, acrylics and oils that comprise "A=-A," Dimitris Anastasiou tells the story of Alpha, a character frantically trying to discover who he is and his place in the world around him. The show at the Ena Art Gallery runs through May 26 Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Jan Wagner | Athens | March 23

German poet Jan Wagner, recipient of the Georg Buchner and Popescu prizes, will appear at the Goethe Institute on Friday, March 23, as part of events for the 2018 Athens World Book Capital initiative. Wagner will discuss his work and sign books, while there will also be a presentation of selected poems that have been translated into Greek.

Herta Muller | Athens | March 21 & 22

Nobel Literature Laureate Herta Muller has been invited by Athens's Goethe Institute to attend the Greek premiere of the poignant 2015 documentary on her turbulent life as a member of Romania's German-speaking minority during the Ceausescu regime. "The Alphabet of Fear" (in German with Greek subtitles) by John Albert Jansen, will be screened on Wednesday, March 21, starting at 8.30 p.m.

Francophone Film Festival | Athens | March 20-28

The annual Francophone Film Festival is back to celebrate the French language on screen, with the theme of this year's event being fashion and luxury. Around 50 films from French-speaking countries around the world will be screened at the Danaos (109 Kifissias & Panormou) and Astor (28 Stadiou, Stoa Korai) cinemas, as well as at the French Institute (31 Sina, Kolonaki).
