Corfu landfill stalled, again

Waste management on Corfu is at a dead end again after the tender for the construction of a processing plant and landfill was canceled for a third time. As a result, the three municipalities of the island and neighboring Paxos will continue to send their waste to Ioannina and Vonitsa on the mainland, with the cost of transportation and disposal exceeding €14 million annually.

The region of Attica is still lagging behind. It is an ongoing risk to the environment, but also a missed opportunity for modern waste management that could yield benefits.

Dry river in Pylos flooded by 80s garbage

Authorities are now scrambling to find solutions so that the rest of the landfill will not subside further in the next bout of bad weather to hit the area.
