Law enforcement

Beyond policing

Soccer-related violence is not just a police issue. It is the business of several state agencies as well as the various bodies involved in the sport in order to dismantle the gangs that operate under the cover of a club jersey.

No new laws or proclamations are required. The problem and its roots are well known. All that is required now is political will.

Prioritizing prevention

Greece's security services are ailing from structural weaknesses that must be cured. This, however, is a process that takes time. What is most pressing now is ensuring that no more blood is spilled, that the murder of a soccer fan on Monday does not evolve into a vendetta between rival fan clubs.

Arrested suspects in fatal soccer clashes face legal process under tight security

The individuals arrested in connection with the fierce clashes between rival soccer club supporters in the western Athens suburb of Nea Filadelfia, which resulted in the killing of a 29-year-old man, were presented before a public prosecutor in Athens on Wednesday, under rigorous security measures. The vast majority of those detained were Croatian nationals.

What did the mass murderer from "Ribnikar" say about weapons? It wasn't the father...

The boy K.K., who committed a mass murder in the elementary school "Vladislav Ribnikar", stated in the High Public Prosecutor's Office that the weapon with which he committed the crime was secured.
The boy said that his father did not provide him with the first contact with a firearm, as was speculated in the media, said his father's lawyer Irina Borovi.

The absence and the chaos

The complete absence of traffic police from the center of Athens is impressive. Citizens are reminded that it exists only when officials are moving around or during demonstrations.

Central intersections are constantly blocked and traffic lights are broken but the traffic police are absent.

Huge backlog of criminal cases

A report compiled by the Athens Prosecutor's Office showed that, every year, 140,000 criminal charges are filed at the office, a huge number that explains the backlog of cases pending in the country's judicial system. These cases are investigated by just 12 prosecutors, which means that each prosecutor has to handle 11,500 criminal charges a year.
