Learning to read

More than 508,000 residents of North Macedonia, more than a quarter of the 1.8 million population, have either not received any formal education, or started but did not finish high school, data on education and literacy from the census conducted last year show.

Often around education-related dates, such as September 15 (the start of the school year in Bulgaria) and May 24 (the national Day of Education, Literacy and Culture), we take stock that we owe a lot to our teachers and what we have learned over the years at school.

A nationally representative survey on the education and self-realization of the Roma community members from the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020 shows that Roma have increased their participation in the education system - as a number of students in both secondary and higher education.

Every third of the adults in Bulgaria (36%) state that they do not spend time reading books, and every fourth (24%) read almost daily. This shows the data from a national representative survey of public opinion conducted by the Open Society Institute - Sofia in April 2018, reports MediaPool.bg
