Some 2,000 local officials face ax over debts
Approximately 2,000 local government officials are facing the ax nearly a year after assuming office due to unpaid utility bills, traffic fines, property taxes and other debts, some of them for paltry sums, following the conclusions of inspections by the relevant authorities that have taken more than 12 months to be carried out.

The digital services that the municipality of West Lesvos provides to its citizens were presented at an event at the municipal theatre of Kalloni in the presence of the Minister of Digital Governance Dimitris Papastergiou, at the first Open Digital Workshop with the general title “Digital Transition, Artificial Intelligence, and Entrepreneurship in the local community”.
Mytilene’s iconic cafe comes alive through art
The reopening of an iconic venue, closed for two and a half years, was marked by the launch of a painting and engraving exhibition at the historic Panellinion cafe in Mytilene, capital of the island of Lesvos in the eastern Aegean. The event was organized by the Peri Technon Karteris gallery, author Nadia Liarelli and Piraeus Bank (owner of the property) on Friday.

Charred body found in car near Lesvos wildfire
A charred body was discovered in a car near a wildfire burning in agroforest land near Polichnitos on Lesvos island.
The elderly driver, believed to be the sole occupant, reportedly died when the vehicle veered off the road and hit a tree, igniting the fire.

Lightning strikes more than 12,000 times
More than 12,000 lightning strikes were recorded across the country by midday Thursday, according to the National Observatory of Athens' Zeus lightning detection network. Forecasts for bad weather with intense lightning activity had been made since the beginning of the week.

Two migrants found dead, 30 rescued off Lesvos
Two migrants were killed and 30 were rescued in Greece on Wednesday after a dinghy crashed into rocks in high winds on the island of Lesvos, local authorities said.
The incident occurred near the resort town of Thermi on the east of the island, facing the nearby coast of Turkey.
