Saramago's 'Blindness' revealed as most borrowed library book in 2023

While the Turkish Librarians Association has listed the most preferred books by library readers in 2023, the most borrowed book was author Jose Saramago's novel, "Blindness."

The Association will organize a series of events under the theme of "Sustainability and Advocacy" as part of the 60th Library Week, which will be held between March 25-31 this year.

More than 165,000 people visit Rami Library in a week

Rami Library, revived from the 250-year-old artillery barracks in Istanbul, has hosted more than 165,000 people in the first week of its opening.

Having a seating capacity of 4,200 people and a capacity of 2.5 million books, the library was visited by 38,000 people on the first day.

Over 16,000 schools provided with libraries

Some 16,000 libraries have been established across the country in two months, said the education minister.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the library in a high school in the capital Ankara, named after psychiatrist Erol Göka, Education Minister Mahmut Özer said that 16,361 schools that did not have a library have been provided with libraries in the last two months.

Number of libraries in country increases to 34,555

With a 1.7 percent rise, the number of libraries across the country has increased to 34,555 in 2021, the Turkish Statistical Institution (TÜİK) has declared.

In a statement issued on June 7, the institution listed, "There is 1 National Library, 1,252 public libraries, 612 university libraries and 32,690 formal and non-formal education institutions' libraries throughout Turkey."

Library named after Hürriyet columnist inaugurated in Istanbul

A library named after daily Hürriyet's columnist Doğan Hızlan has been inaugurated by Turkish Education Minister Mahmut Özer inside a high school in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on April 20, Hızlan advised young people to read books, saying, "Everybody should learn their native language well, and this can only be obtained by reading books."
