Piraeus port getting direct rail link to Athens Airport

Piraeus, Greece's biggest port and one of the largest in the Mediterranean, is finally getting a direct rail link to Athens International Airport, starting next month.

Starting on February 1, Piraeus will become a terminus for the Proastiakos suburban railway, connecting the port to the airport at Spata, northeast of the capital.

No public transport, rallies as workers protest multi-bill

Commuters in the capital are set for another day of frustration on Monday as public transport workers walk off the job in protest at the government's multi-bill of austerity measures and reforms which is to be voted on in Parliament later in the day.

There will be no services on the Athens metro, the Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway (ISAP), trolley buses, city buses or the tram.

General Strike to Disrupt Public Transport, Government Services

Thursday's general strike, called last week by the country's two main umbrella labor unions to protest ongoing austerity, will disrupt public transport as well as halting most government and state services, Ekathimerini reported.

Commuters are to face a difficult day due to restricted services on public transport.

Prison fugitive caught east of Athens

A 50-year-old inmate who failed to return from a furlough more than two years ago was arrested on Wednesday in Spata, east of Athens, police said.

Police said the fugitive, Antonis Karamolengos, had been serving a life sentence for killing two police officers outside the headquarters of the capital's police in 1990, before violating furlough in March 2015 

Metro stoppage Friday, strike likely next week

Workers on the Athens metro will be holding a work stoppage on Friday morning, which means there will be no service until after 9 a.m., while they may stage a 24-hour strike next week.

Friday's walkout, organized to protest plans for the company's privatization, will affect the metro's lines 2 and 3, including services to Athens International Airport.
