Turkey's animal production up 4.7 percent in 2019

Turkey's animal production saw an increase of 4.7 percent, around 3 million, year-on-year in 2019, the country's statistical authority said on Feb. 6.

TÜİK said the total number of animals in Turkey last year reached 66.6 million.

Including cattle and buffalos, the number of bovine animals totaled 17.87 million in 2019, up 3.8 percent year-on-year.

Varna Region: More than 40,000 Pigs will be Put Down due to ASF

More than 40,000 pigs will be put down in Varna, the reason African swine fever case.

A few days ago, new cases of ASF were registered in the village of Brestak.

The pig farm is one of the largest in the area. It employs about 130 people.

After the new case of the ASF, authorities banned the transportation of animals.

Hen egg production up in November

Turkey's hen egg production increased by 1.2 percent to 1.69 billion units in November 2019 on a yearly basis, Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) revealed on Jan. 13.

The hen egg production increased by 1.3 percent to reach 18.15 billion units during the first 11 months of 2019, TÜİK data showed.

Animal rights activists were allowed to observe the barns in which some 1,100 horses are kept under quarantine in the Princes' Islands off Istanbul after 105 of them were killed due to glanders, an infectious disease that occurs primarily in horses and can be contracted by humans and other animals.

Crete Christmas manger robbed of its hay

Residents of a suburb in Iraklio on the island of Crete woke up on Friday to the robbery of hay balls that decorated a Christmas manger that was set up by the local cultural center.

The local Cretalive.gr website said the theft took place on Thursday night.

According to reports, the robbers took the hay to feed their livestock.

99 Illegal Pigs, Hidden by their Owners, Were Killed in Aheloy

Officials of the Regional Food Safety Directorate (RFSD) - Burgas have slaughtered 99 pigs, hidden by their owners, said the press office of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Water. Following a tip-off about free-ranging pigs in the Panaya area between the towns of Aheloy and Kableshkovo, a spot-check was carried out.
