Istanbul traffic police have stepped up their inspections to identify Uber vehicles and motorcycles utilizing Scott, an Uber-like ridesharing app, following President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's comments that Uber will no longer be in use in the Turkish metropolis.

The average price of a taxicab license plate in Istanbul has increased 6.6 percent in just two days, after the city municipality declared its support for the government's new regulation to prevent "illegal passenger transportation," particularly aimed at Uber drivers.

Uber is a terrorist organization and users of the ridesharing app are traitors to the nation, Istanbul Taxi Drivers Union head İrfan Öztürk said on April 12, amid continued tension between Uber drivers and regular taxi drivers in Turkey's largest city.

Amid recent tension between Uber and taxi drivers in Turkey, Mustafa Ilıcalı, parliament's transportation commission spokesperson, has proposed a system envisaging the administering of all taxis from a "centralized system."

The ride-hailing app Uber announced Thursday that it would be suspending its licensed services in Greece from next Tuesday, reacting to new laws passed last month that restrict its operations.

The move relates to the service UberX, which uses professional licensed drivers, not to UberTaxi, which uses local taxi drivers and which Uber said it would seek to continue with.
