A Cypriot lawyer said Thursday he's going to the European Union's Court of Justice to get the bloc's executive arm to use money earmarked as assistance to Turkey to compensate a client who won a human rights case against the Turkish state.
Euro court orders Turkey to pay compensation to man shot by police officer
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) on Dec. 19 ordered Turkey to pay 68,000 euros in compensation to a man who filed an application with the court that a police officer had shot him without subsequently being punished. The court said the police had violated his right to life.
Turkey plans to ignore court order to pay compensation to Cyprus
Turkey has no plans to pay 90 million euros ($124 million) to Cyprus as ordered by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Tuesday.
The money was ordered in compensation for Turkey's invasion of the island 40 years ago.
