London Heathrow airport has cut about 10% of incoming and outgoing flights with the 20 biggest carriers on Tuesday as the tail-end of hurricane Conzalo slammed into Britain.

Heathrow said the cancellations were precautionary and were prompted by the need to increase spacing between aircraft landing and taking off as winds of up to 112 km/h were expected to sweep the runways.

British Airways has reportedly announced that it will be adding new flights to popular Mediterranean destinations, including the Greek islands of Kos in the eastern Aegean and Corfu in the northern Ionian, Breaking Travel News website said on Thursday.

The new routes, which also include Olbia in Sardinia and Split in Croatia will be launched on May 1, 2015.

A plan to build a major new airport to the east of London was rejected Sept. 2 by a government-appointed commission, dealing a blow to its high-profile backer, the city’s mayor Boris Johnson.

France on Friday said it is boosting passenger screening at its airports, responding to a request from Washington for extra security for US-bound flights over fears Islamist radicals could be plotting new attacks using hard-to-detect bombs.

Air seats to Greece have increased by 10 percent this year as not only are low-fare airlines choosing the country as a destination despite Athens International Airport’s high costs, but established carriers are now returning to the country’s airspace in response to its growing tourism figures.

British Airways will operate direct flights from London’s Heathrow Airport to the Greek islands of Myconos and Santorini for the high season starting on May 3. The airliner has also added a Thessaloniki-London Gatwick Airport service four times a week.
