Firefighter Iulian Rotariu, with the Botosani Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU) grabbed first place in the general ranking of the ultra-marathon from the Andes in Bolivia, which is taking place during the period of 20-26 of September.

Turkey's first female ultramarathon runner, Bakiye Duran, 62, is set to run in the Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) that will be held Aug. 23.

Duran will run in the 300-kilometer UTMB, first held in 2003. The race will cover France, Italy and Switzerland and competitors will circle Mont Blanc massif in the Alps.

Kenyan athlete Daniel Kipkore Kibet wins the 41st Istanbul Marathon men's title by breaking the 42 km Istanbul Marathon track record while Ethiopian athlete Hirut Tibebu wins women's title at the intercontinental Istanbul Marathon on Nov. 3.

Celebrating the 15th anniversary of Bulgaria's accession to NATO and the Alliance's 70th anniversary, the traditional Ekiden relay marathon took place in central Sofia on Friday (6 September 2019). The popular annual event saw a record number of participants this year - 606 runners, organized in 101 teams.

Now in its eighth year, the Penny Marathon raises awareness and funds for stray and neglected animals through a pet-friendly walk/run. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) will host the last 10 kilometer-leg of the 42k race, in which participants will run, swim, cycle and paddle. The race was established by two Greek Australians looking to bolster animal rights in Greece.

Hiking and nature appreciation club Rediscover Skyros and the island's municipal authority are organizing a half marathon on Saturday, June 22. The beautiful route starts from the main square of Skyros Town and participants can pick a distance that suits them - 5, 10 or 21 kilometers. A 1,300-meter event for children has also been organized.

A record number of runners participated in the 40th Istanbul Marathon, the world's only cross-continental race, held on Nov. 11.

The 36th Athens Authentic Marathon and its parallel runs will take place in the Greek capital on Sunday, with the participation of a record number of 55,000 runners from 106 countries.
