Greek firefighters contain a blaze at a major oil refinery that injured 3 workers

Three workers suffered light injuries during a fire Tuesday at a major oil refinery west of Athens that prompted Greek authorities to issue an evacuation alert for the surrounding area.

The blaze near the seaside town of Agioi Theodoroi, some 70 kilometers (40 miles) from Athens, was contained following a large firefighting operation, authorities said.

Arsonist arrested near Corinth

A man was arrested for arson in Loutraki, Corinth on Monday and remanded in custody pending trial.  

The man, arrested by the fire department's investigative unit, is accused of intentionally starting a fire at a forest area in Corinth.

He is expected to appear before a prosecutor later on Monday.

Wednesday brought no respite to the hundreds of firefighters, volunteers, municipal workers and military personnel who spent all night battling major wildfires in West Attica and Corinthia - raging for a third day - and a new blaze on the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes.

Settlements evacuated as wildfires spread

Residents in a number of settlements in Corinthia and Western Attica have received 112 emergency messages ordering them to evacuate their homes due to fires raging in the region.

Shortly after 7 p.m., residents of the Glykia Zoi settlement in Corinthia were ordered to evacuate their homes and move towards Agioi Theodoroi.

All roads between Elefsina and Corinth closed due to fires

All roads between Elefsina and Corinth have been closed by order of the police, due to the intensification of wildfires in the region.

The order concerns the new motorway between the two toll stations at Elefsina and Corinth as well as the old national highway.

The roads are the only access points to the Peloponnese from Athens.
