Kyiv officials have taken credit for the killing of former Ukrainian politician Illia Kyva, a 46-year-old pro-Russian politician whose body was found in a suburb near Moscow.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the war is gradually returning to Russian territory, after three Ukrainian drones were shot down over Moscow.

Russia said Monday it had repelled "a large-scale offensive" by Ukrainian forces in Moscow-annexed Donetsk, as fighting intensified along their border.

Kiev has for months said it is preparing a major counteroffensive, hoping to reclaim territory lost since Russia launched its military operation in February 2022.

At a meeting of the Security Council of Russia, Putin said that territorial defense headquarters should be established in the self-proclaimed Lugansk and Donetsk People's Republics, as well as in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, reports RIA Novosti.
Martial law in these four areas will be in effect from tomorrow.

"Continuing the defense of the city would lead to fatal consequences. In order to preserve the lives of the defenders of Ukraine, a decision was made to withdraw," said a statement published on social networks, reports Reuters.

Syria has recognized the DPR and LPR

Syria has decided to recognize the independence and sovereignty of the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics, SANA news agency and Syrian state television reported, citing an official source from the foreign ministry.

EU leaders will gather in Brussels on June 23 to discuss calls to formally grant war-torn Ukraine "candidate status" to join the bloc, as Russian forces slowly advance in the eastern Donbas region despite fierce resistance from Kyiv's military.
