Stanford University awards Turkish student with $500,000 scholarship

Stanford University has offered an 18-year-old Turkish student a scholarship of approximately 10 million Turkish Liras ($500,000).

Efe Zaladin, who graduated from a private high school in the Central Anatolian province of Konya last year, discovered his interest in science as a child.

Inscription shows Turkish presence in Anatolia in 10th century

An inscription belonging to an unspecified period before the 1071 Battle of Manzikert, known as the victory that led the Turks to first enter Anatolia, has been found in the Central Anatolian province of Konya, with the head of the excavation informing it's the "evidence of the Turkish presence in the 10th century."

Municipalities encouraging animal adoption with bonuses

The metropolitan municipality of the Central Anatolian province of Konya and Istanbul's Beykoz district municipality have started encouraging people to adopt animals from shelters with money and animal food bonuses.

The municipalities give people who opt for pet adoption from shelters free food and medical checkup services for those animals.

Sanitation workers with bikes on roads in Konya

Sanitation workers in the Central Anatolian province of Konya, known as the "cycling city of Turkey," have started working on specially designed bikes built in the city's industrial zone.

The city has a bicycle road of 550 kilometers, the longest in Turkey and the second-longest in the world after New York, the U.S.

Magnitude 5.1 quake jolts central Turkey

A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Turkey's central Konya province, the country's disaster authority announced on Nov. 8.

The quake shook the Meram district of the Konya province at 8.43 p.m. local time (1743GMT), according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).

It occurred at a depth of 6.82 kilometers (4.2 miles) below the surface, it added.

Sufi poet commemorated at historical palace

Yunus Emre, one of the most important figures of Turkish-Islamic folk thought, was commemorated on the 700th anniversary of his death at the world-famous Ishak Pasha Palace in the eastern province of Ağrı.

In the program, held in the courtyard of the historic palace, the Konya Turkish Sufi Music Ensemble performed various works by the great mystic.
