Turkish President Recep Erdogan has agreed to submit the protocol for Sweden's accession to NATO to the parliament in Ankara for ratification as soon as possible.

This was announced in Vilnius by the Secretary General of the Pact, Jens Stoltenberg, after a meeting with Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Türkiye agreed on July 10 to allow Sweden to join NATO, setting the stage for the allies to showcase their unity at a summit focused on supporting Ukraine against Russia's invasion.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg announced today that the process of ratifying Sweden's application for membership in the Alliance will begin.
"Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made it clear that Turkey is ready to ratify Sweden's membership," Stoltenberg said at a press conference, reports Swedish public service SVT.

Türkiye has demanded the resumption of the full membership talks with the European Union to consider the accession of Sweden into NATO, a day before the critical alliance's leaders' summit in Vilnius.

NATO allies have reached agreement to raise the alliance's target for military spending to at least 2% of national GDP, two diplomats told Reuters late on Friday.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has urged Sweden once again to uphold its promises in the fight against terrorism as the Nordic country pursues NATO membership.

Sweden failed on Thursday to convince Turkey to lift its block on Stockholm's path to NATO membership, and the issue will now go to a meeting of the Turkish and Swedish leaders next week.

In an effort to address Turkish objections to Sweden's accession to NATO, senior officials from Türkiye, Sweden and Finland will gather in Brussels today for a crucial meeting.

Turkey has agreed to support the candidacies of Finland and Sweden for NATO membership. The news was confirmed by the Secretary-General of the Alliance Jens Stoltenberg.
