Payments by card up 12.5% in Q2
The value of payments by credit and debit card rose 12.5% in the second quarter (April-June) of 2024 to over €18.8 billion.
The number of transactions by card rose 15.2% to 629.2 million.
The numbers include transactions made abroad with cards issued by Greek banks.

Total card payments grew 2 percent from May.

EU plans cheaper electronic transactions
The European Commission wants to make online transactions faster and safer by making immediate payments the main option to pay for online items or simply transferring money. The EU's proposed law aims to make quick payments a barrier to the dominance of international systems such as Visa and MasterCard, as well as the entry of large internet companies into the payments sector.

There are a total of 214 million banking cards, including debit and credit cards, in Turkey that puts the country ahead of any nation in Europe, according to the deputy general manager of the Interbank Card Center (BKM).

EU Fines Mastercard EUR 570 Million in Anti-trust Action
The European Union has fined global credit card giant Mastercard 570 million euros ($647 million) for limiting competition between banks offering cheaper payment fees, reports AFP.
Card payments up by 50 percent in a year
A Focus Bari survey conducted for Mastercard found that card transactions soared by 50 percent in January, the first full month since the implementation of a law that only allows taxpayers who pay for their purchases with plastic to qualify for an income tax discount.
