‘Cat town’ offers pleasant moments for felines

A "cat town" established on a 20-acre plot in the Black Sea province of Samsun is home to dozens of stray cats in the city.

Cats spend their time, eat and play in the cat town, located in an animal care center for helpless and unattended cats.

As the town's number of cats has increased to 150, works are continuing to double the town's size.

Wildlife park draws visitors despite pandemic

The Ormanya Wildlife Park in the northwestern province of Kocaeli hosted 5 million visitors despite the coronavirus pandemic last year.

Kocaeli Mayor Tahir Büyükakın said that Ormanya, located in Kartepe district, opened in May 2018. With a spectacular natural habitat, Ormanya welcomes millions of visitors each year, becoming Turkey's most visited one.

Well-preserved Ice Age woolly rhino found in Siberia

A well-preserved Ice Age woolly rhino with many of its internal organs still intact has been recovered from permafrost in Russia's extreme north.

Russian media reported on Dec. 30 that the carcass was revealed by melting permafrost in Yakutia in August. Scientists are waiting for ice roads in the Arctic region to become passable to deliver it to a lab for studies next month.

Rhodes planning to control deer overpopulation

The number of "platoni," a subspecies of fallow deer (Dama dama), living in forested areas of the southeastern Aegean island of Rhodes has jumped from around 200 a few years ago to more than 5,000, according to a recent census conducted as part of a plan for their management, in response to the problem caused by their overpopulation, mainly in terms of crop damage.
