Within the scope of the efforts to protect wildlife in the eastern province of Van's lake basins, gendarmerie units are keeping a close watch on endangered white-headed ducks by patrolling the region 24/7.

Lake Erçek, located near Lake Van, hosts thousands of birds every year. One of the rarest birds of the region, white-headed ducks, also live around this area.

The migration of birds has already begun and is in full swing, said Dr. Peter Yankov, an ecologist at the Poda Nature Conservation Centre of the Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB), in an interview with Focus News Agency.

Pakistan's warm waters have long been a refuge for millions of birds that migrate from Siberia to avoid the stinging winter every year. However, the numbers of migratory birds have fallen drastically in recent years due to massive hunting by hunters both local and foreign. But the poor birds have found a new wetland — safe from the fear of hunting — at least for now.

This has been especially true for northeastern Bulgaria, where the late winter hit the hardest.

Safet Khalid of the Silistra village of Zaritsa saved five storks last night from frost. Khalid released late last night on Facebook a photo of the birds he hosted at his home. He found them half stiff and with the help of friends he brought them to his home.

Today, Nezabravka Kirova-Hristova from the same village published a photo of Safet and the storks surviving in his home.
