When Zozo Christodoulou arrived at the Panathenaic Stadium one morning in 1974, the symbolic weight of what she was about to do had not yet dawned on her. "I didn't want to prove anything. I just wanted to run," she says. But she had already accomplished one first that day by being a Greek woman at the starting line of the Athens Marathon.

The Sofia Marathon is Today, No Cars Allowed in the City Center

Today athletes from 5 continents will run on the streets of Sofia. This will happen in one of the oldest marathons in Europe, which has a 34-year history. The marathon route will block many streets in Sofia. This year, a record number of participants will take part in the Sofia Marathon - 3000. It is expected that about 1/3 of them will be foreigners.

Brnabic: Joining EU is "like a marathon"

BRUSSELS - Joining the EU is "a matter of endurance and not a competition," Serbian PM Ana Brnabic told the Euractiv.com portal in an interview.

"For Serbia, joining the EU is like a marathon. When you run a marathon you are not competing against anyone else but yourself. In that sense, I don't think any country should be bothered by who is the front or second runner," she said.

Sign up for the Spetses Mini Marathon, which includes running and swimming events for kids and adults, as well as a stand-up paddle board race. Participation for the majority of the events is free of charge. Now in its sixth year, the annual event is expecting up to 6,000 athletes and 12,000 visitors on the Saronic island.
