Ljubljana, Maribor military barracks to be renovated
Ljubno ob Savinji – The Defence Ministry plans to renovate several military barracks. The costs of renovation of the Edvard Peperko Barracks in Ljubljana and the General Rudolf Maister Barracks in Maribor have been estimated at EUR 130 million.
The renovation is to improve energy efficiency of the buildings, its functionality and the working conditions.
Croat apprehended for smuggling four Chinese
Maribor – A 47-year-old Croatian citizen has been apprehended by Slovenian police after being found smuggling four Chinese citizens unlawfully into the country in his car on Saturday.

Police arrest three suspects over prostitution
Maribor – Police have arrested a 53-year-old woman and a 71-year-old man from Slovenia, and a 56-year-old Serbian woman who are suspected of human trafficking after police received reports of them forcing women into prostitution, the Maribor Police Department said on Thursday.

New Year’s Eve Kiss celebrates 50th anniversary
Maribor – A pop song without which Slovenians can hardly imagine a New Year’s Eve is celebrating its 50th anniversary. To mark the anniversary, a museum in Maribor honoured its singer and citizen Alfi Nipič with an exhibition which traces his 60-year career while he marked the anniversary in hospital ill with Covid-19.

Small protest staged in Maribor targeting Mayor Arsenovič
Maribor – A small rally was held in Maribor’s central square on Saturday targeting Mayor Saša Aresnovoč. About a hundred people gathered near the Town Hall calling for his resignation. The protesters also burnt a few posters with the mayor’s image.
Slovenia remembers defender of its northern border
Ljubljana – Slovenia observes Rudolf Maister Day on Tuesday, remembering the general who established the first Slovenian army in modern history and secured what later became Slovenia’s northern border. The holiday commemorates the day in 1918 when Maister (1874-1934) took control of Maribor.

Nine years after Drava floods, courts still processing claims
Maribor – It will be exactly nine years at the beginning of November since the Drava river flooded the majority of its course in Slovenia to leave extensive damage to homes and businesses. Damage lawsuits filed against the Austrian power utility Verbund over the flooding are still being processed and the state is in negotiations with the company.
Space now in Slovenian focus at Expo
Dubai – After focusing on business in the weeks after the official opening, activities at Slovenian pavilion at the Expo Dubai will revolve around space and space technology in the second half of October.
As of Sunday, Slovenian companies will be featured under the Universe topic in the pavilion, while a delegation of space-tech companies will visit the Expo on Wednesday.

Slovenia fail to make it to World Cup after loss against Russia
Maribor – The Slovenian men’s football team conceded defeat to Russia (1:2) in Maribor on Monday evening. Thus, Slovenia failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup.
The eighth match of the qualification was fatal for the Slovenian side, which will miss out on the World Cup in Qatar. The team still has two more matches to play, one away match in Slovakia and a home game against Cyprus.
Pre-fab house maker Lumar increases revenues, expects growth
Maribor – Lumar IG, a Maribor-based maker of prefabricated energy-efficient homes, increased its revenues by more than 6% to over EUR 19 million last year despite the epidemic and challenging conditions. The company ended the year with a net profit of EUR 1.4 million, almost double the figure of 2019.
