Economic sentiment sinks to lowest level in 18 months

The mood regarding the economy in Greece is at its gloomiest in the last 18 months as the uncertainty over the future grows and fears of the worst are far from banished, according to a survey on economic sentiment by the Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE) published on Tuesday.

Greek factory activity contracted at the fastest rate in almost a year in September as output and new orders declined, a survey showed on Wednesday.

Markit's purchasing managers' index for manufacturing, which makes up about 10 percent of Greece's economy, fell to 48.4 in September from 50.1 in August, sliding back below the 50 mark that denotes growth.

Greek PMI at 51 points in May as eurozone manufacturing slows

Greece’s manufacturing remained in growth territory in May, although the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) fell slightly to 51 points, according to London-based Markit.

The PMI was at 51.1 in April. “The PMI remained on the right side of the 50.0 mark in May, signalling steady albeit unspectacular growth at factories,” said Markit analyst Phil Smith.

Greek factory activity expanded again in April thanks to the first rise in employment in six years and faster increases in output and new orders, a survey showed on Friday.

Manufacturing activity has veered between contraction and growth since it logged its first month of expansion since mid-2009 in January.
