A few weeks later, after a successful European Council summit, which agreed a compromise solution over the rule-of-law conditionality that EU institutions want to impose on EU funds, Morawiecki was hailing it as a victory for Poland: "Thank you [Hungarian Prime Minister] Viktor Orban for our cooperation for the best budget for Poland and the fight to keep the agreed conditions."

European Council President Charles Michel spoke for many when he tweeted: "Now we can start with the implementation [of the budget and recovery package] and build back our economies."

Politicians from Poland's governing coalition have fallen back on the typical anti-German tropes to justify the veto.

With the European Council just a little more than a week away, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias have embarked on a veritable diplomatic marathon with the aim of further building a solid framework of positions with regard to Turkey. 

Prime Minister Ludovic Orban had a meeting on Thursday, in a videoconference system, with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, occasion on which the Polish Development Fund model was presented, with the talks on this topic to be continued at the level of expert teams of Romania and Poland.

Poland will open hotels and malls on May 4 and is still considering the return of preschool children to kindergartens on May 6, the country's prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, said today, quoted by Reuters.

But as Poland confirmed 150 cases of the virus on Monday morning, Health Minister Lukasz Szumowski said, "We must expect a four-digit number of people infected with coronavirus this week." 

Mayor of the Ukrainian capital Vitali Klitschko announced that schools and universities in the city will be closed from tomorrow until the end of March to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, Reuters reported.
