The appointment of former Greek Police chief Konstantinos Tsouvalas to the crucial post of general secretary of the Citizen's Protection Ministry has caused a political maelstrom as he was in charge of police's botched management of the deadly July, 2018 Mati wildfire that claimed over 100 lives.

Fire-ravaged town starts rebuilding

Three hundred of the houses that were ravaged in last summer's disastrous wildfires in Mati, eastern Attica, have received permits to rebuild and are slated to receive state funding for the purpose, Infrastructure Ministry General Secretary Maria Kleanthi told a meeting of local authority officials and residents on Wednesday.

WWF Hellas warns of failings after Mati disaster

Attica regional governor election ad sparks controversy

A political ad by SYRIZA's Rena Dourou, who is running for re-election as Attica regional governor, sparked a public outcry as it showed her speaking against a backdrop of images from the devastating wildfires in eastern Attica that led to the deaths of more than 100 people.

Dourou has come under fire since the tragedy, as it happened under her watch as regional governor.
