Snow castles and sculptures evoke ancient legend
The town of Črna na Koroškem north Slovenia hosted its annual snow sculpting competition this weekend. Unlike in recent years, there was plenty of snow and temperatures were low.
The event, known as the Castles of King Matjaž, evokes the legend of a righteous king sleeping under the nearby Mount Peca, which competitors as a rule explore as the theme in their sculptures.

Rising football star takes home player of the year award
Benjamin Šeško, who plays for the Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg and is considered one of the European strikers to watch out for, has won Slovenia’s player of the year award. The 19-year-old also took home the award for best young player.

Brdo pri Kranju – Slovenian scientists and business people living and working abroad came together in Brdo pri Kranju for their annual meeting on Thursday. Government representatives addressing the event underlined the importance of sharing in the knowledge gained abroad and expressed worry about brain drain.
Trial starts in NKMB property transactions case
Maribor – Two and a half years after the first pre-trial hearing in a case in which former NKBM bank CEO Matjaž Kovačič and his aides are being tried for property transactions in Croatia in 2006-2007, the main hearing was held at the Maribor court on Wednesday. All four former senior bank officials denied the charges.

Slovenia beat Cyprus to wrap up 2022 World Cup qualifying
Ljubljana – Slovenia beat Cyprus 2:1 in Ljubljana on Sunday to wrap up the qualifying campaign for the 2022 World Cup in the fourth spot in Group H. After a scoreless first half, Miha Zajc and Adam Gnezda Čerin scored for Slovenia to close the disappointing qualifiers on a winning note.

Valletta – The Slovenian national football team beat Malta 4:0 in the qualifying for the World Cup on Friday night to remain in theoretical contention for a World Cup berth ahead of Monday’s game against Russia.

Slovenia lose to Croatia in 2022 World Cup qualifiers
Split – Slovenia lost against Croatia 0:3 in Split on Tuesday in the sixth round of the group stage of the World Cup qualifiers, with almost no chances left for qualification now. Coach Matjaž Kek and captain Jan Oblak acknowledged Croatia’s superiority after the match.
