Kobe Bryant, one of the NBA's all-time greatest players and an athlete of global renown, was killed at age 41 on Jan. 26 in a helicopter crash near Los Angeles along with his 13-year-old daughter and seven on board, officials said.   

LeBron James scored 23 of his 31 points in the second half as the Los Angeles Lakers broke open a close game to register a ninth straight NBA victory, 128-99 over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Former NBA Commissioner David Stern, who retired in 2014 after 30 years, has died, the league announced on Jan. 2. 

Stern suffered a brain hemorrhage on Dec. 12 and underwent emergency surgery.
He passed away with his wife, Dianne, and their family at his bedside, the NBA said on its official website.
