Refugee camp in northern Greece quarantined after Covid-19 infection

A refugee camp in Nea Kavala was quarantined by health authorities on Thursday after a pregnant woman tested positive for Covid-19, according to reports in local media.

Teams from the National Organization for Public Health (EODY), along with the Health Ministry's infectious disease expert Sotiris Tsiodras, are at the camp testing all residents.

The Health Minister, Nelu Tataru, has stated on Wednesday that the COVID-19 prevalence test, which will show the percentage of the population immunized to the novel coronavirus, will be done over June, July and August and will be conducted on a sample of 29,019 subjects. "The prevalence test will be done in June, July and I believe August.

Study points to success of Greek lockdown

The lockdown in response to the coronavirus pandemic and the implementation of multiple measures promoting social distancing led to an 81 percent reduction of Greece's R number (which measures the rate of the virus' reproduction), according to a study by Greek researchers.

The R number is basically how many people an infected person will transmit the disease to.

"The most important thing was to find out how it was transmitted, because at the beginning, it was said that it was by droplets. It was strange to me that there were 1.000 cases a day and I said - if we all kissed and spat on each other, it wouldn't be like this," says Dr Ana Gligic, who stopped "smallpox epidemic" about 50 years ago.
