German Chancellor Merkel wins TV debate against Schulz

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was the comfortable winner of Sunday night’s TV debate against her political rival Martin Schulz of the Social Democrats, according to a phone poll by state broadcaster ARD. The poll showed Mrs. Merkel received a 55% positive response compared to her opponent who got only 35%.

Merkel criticises Turkey after two more German citizens detained

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sept. 1 sharply criticised Turkey's detention of two further German citizens, saying Berlin should react decisively and perhaps rethink its relations with Ankara.

Under the circumstances, Merkel said she did not think it was appropriate to carry out further discussions with Ankara about its participation in a European Union customs union. 

Germany's Merkel says ties with Turkey in a 'complicated phase'

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Aug. 29 at a Berlin press conference that she wanted to have better relations with Turkey, but the relationship between Berlin and Ankara was currently at "a very complicated phase."

"I would very much like having better relations, but we have to face reality … It's a very complicated phase in our relations," she said.

Merkel said Germany would like better relations with Turkey but added that Ankara had to take steps regarding fulfillment of the principles of the rule of law.

Angela Merkel: 'European Central Bank Monetary Policy is not Where Germany Would Like It To Be'

The European Central Bank's monetary policy is not yet where Germany would like it to be, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said, after years of ultra-loose measures designed to keep the euro zone afloat, reported Reuters. 

In a rare comment on the ECB's policy, which the German government frequently stresses is set independently, Merkel said it was important to make Europe fit again.

Merkel Ready to Consider Macron Eurozone Reform Ideas

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Tuesday she was prepared to "consider" new French President Emmanuel Macron's proposals for a shake-up of the eurozone, AFP reported.
Speaking to business leaders, Merkel said "we could of course consider a common finance minister, if the circumstances are right," citing one of Macron's frequently touted ideas.
