Strong quake strikes central Mediterranean Sea
Scientists say a strong earthquake struck in the central Mediterranean Sea region early on Thursday.
The Athens Institute of Geodynamics gave a preliminary magnitude of 5.9, while the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said it measured 6.2.

Bonds of friendship formed at Pylos archaeological dig
Maria Zacharopoulou spent hours as a young girl on her balcony watching American and Greek archaeologists hard at work in the building next to her family home in the village of Hora in Messinia, in the southwestern Peloponnese. She was awed and intrigued by the discoveries they were making in local archaeological digs and dreamed of one day becoming a part of their team.
Police investigating shooting of German couple in Kyparissia
Greek police were Thursday investigating the shooting of a German man and his wife in a summer house in Kyparissia, a town in northwestern Messinia, Peloponnese.
According to reports, the man was shot and killed in the yard, while his spouse was seriously injured.
She remained hospitalized in critical condition Thursday.
Two arrested for arson in the Peloponnese
Two men were arrested on Thursday for suspected arsons in the regional units of Messinia and Ilia, state-run news agency ANA-MPA reported.
The first suspect, a 52-year-old man, is accused of starting several fires in a forested area near the old Kalamata-Tripoli national highway and in dry vegetation near the Tsakonas-Kalo Nero old highway - both in Messinia.

Ileia and Crete rattled by separate tremors
The region of Ileia in the southern Peloponnese was shaken by a 4.6-magnitude quake just before 1 a.m. on Saturday morning.
According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute, the temblor's epicenter was in the Ionian Sea, 53 kilometers southwest of the town of Kyparissia at a depth of 3.5 kilometers.

Authorities warn of high wildfire risk in Attica, among other regions
Greece's civil protection authority on Monday warned that eight parts of the country have been deemed as a category four wildfire risk, with an additional 12 one notch lower in category three due to rising temperatures.
