Greekreporter.com - The weather split Greece into two halves on Thursday as the north experienced heavy snowfall, whereas a sandstorm and mini-heatwave hit the south and in particular the island of Crete.

The contrast in the weather was predicted by a Greek meteorologist a few days earlier.

Orange code because of snowfall is announced today for the North and parts of Central Bulgaria. Because of the snow in many places, the movement of the trucks will be forbidden. Yesterday some roads were temporarily closed for cleaning.

Over the next 24 hours, the weather will continue to become more complicated. During the night snowfall will increase and the snow cover will increase. A moderate and temporarily strong northeast wind will continue to breathe cold air. There will be snow blizzards and winds will form. The minimum temperatures will be between minus 5 and 0 degrees, according to the NIMH - BAS forecast.

Nearly 440 snow removal machines are clearing the national roads in areas where it is snowing to ensure safe travel in winter conditions, said the press office of the Road Infrastructure Agency. 

Moderate, sometimes strong northeastern wind will bring further cold air in the country today. The meteorologists forecast snow, in the Upper Thracian Plain rain transitioning into snow amid decreasing temperatures. Only in the remote southwestern regions, it will continue raining.

Today the wind from south-southwest will increase and will remain strong for some time in the eastern half of the country and on the northern mountain slopes. Already before noon, however, the wind will blow from east in the eastern regions and from northeast in Northern Bulgaria.

Today, from the southwest, the rainfall will stop and the cloud will tear temporarily and it will be sunny.

A yellow warning code for glaze ice has been declared for the entire Northern Bulgaria, according to the website of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology.

This morning there was initially a warning for only 9 regions of the country. The degree of warning allows for some outdoor activities to be limited.

It will be mostly cloudy over the country today, with light rain in many places, light snow in Northwestern Bulgaria. Glaze ice is possible in the central parts of the Danube Plain.
