Turkish teacher falls victim to femicide in United States

A Turkish woman has fallen victim to an incident of femicide, but this time in the United States, not in Turkey where a woman is killed by someone she knows almost every day.

Bengü Metin, a 38-year-old teacher, was found fatally shot by her ex-husband in Virginia, just six days after she was granted a divorce. Her mother, Semra Metin, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Buca Prison shut down after 62 years

A well-known prison in the Aegean province of İzmir has been closed after hosting more than 600,000 inmates in 62 years.

The İzmir Closed and Open Penitentiary Institution, also known as the Buca Prison, which was evacuated after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake that occurred last year, was shut down following an approval of the Justice Ministry.

Istanbul to host new int’l art fair ‘Artcontact’

Istanbul will host a new international contemporary art fair called '"Artcontact" between May 31 and June 6 at the Avrasya Arts Center.

Atis, the company that has been organizing the ArtAnkara Contemporary Art Fair in the capital for seven years, will organize the Artcontact Contemporary Art Fair this year.

Turkish-German academic elected as prestigious German university’s rector

Metin Tolan, a Turkish-origin German physicist, has been elected as the rector of the University of Göttingen, one of the world's leading universities.

The university senate unanimously elected Tolan as rector and the board of trustees of the institution approved the decision, according to a written statement from the University of Göttingen.

Ankara hosts photo exhibit on Pakistan

Pakistan's Embassy in Turkey is hosting a seven-day photo exhibit in the capital Ankara. 

The exhibit - "Colors of Pakistan Through the Eyes of Turks," done in coordination with Anadolu Agency and the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality - features 52 sheets of photographers, including Anadolu Agency photojournalists Metin Aktas and Ismet Keten.
