The first case of SARS-CoV-2 didn't emerge from a Wuhan wet market, according to experts at the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV).

Instead, the live animal market may have been the site of a superspreader event, where one person spread the virus to many other people, one US-based expert told Live Science.

A number of 191 new cases of people infected with the novel coronavirus have been recorded in Romania since the previous information, bringing the total case count to 18,982, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS) reported on Friday. Of the people confirmed positive, 12,829 have been declared cured and discharged. As many as 182 COVID-19 patients are in intensive care.

Three more people infected with the novel coronavirus have died in Romania, bringing the total death toll to 1,238, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS), the official novel coronavirus communication task force, reported on Friday morning. These are two women and a man aged 62 to 83.

No new cases of the novel coronavirus have been detected in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) over the last 41 days, the country's deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs said on May 28.

The last positive case was confirmed on April 17.

 A number of 197 new cases of people infected with the novel coronavirus have been recorded in Romania since the previous information, bringing the total case count to 18,791, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS), the official coronavirus communication task force, reported on Thursday. Of the people confirmed positive, 12,629 have been declared cured and discharged.

The death toll in the U.S. from the novel coronavirus surpassed the 100,000 mark on May 27, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. 

The Maryland-based university counted 100,047 deaths and 1,695,776 cases.

The U.S. continues to lead in cases and deaths worldwide from the virus.

Four more persons have passed away due to the novel coronavirus, taking the COVID-19 death toll to 1,223, the Strategic Communication Group informs on Wednesday.

A number of 165 new cases of people infected with the novel coronavirus have been recorded in Romania since the last information that bring the total case count to 18,594, the Strategic Communication Group (GCS), the official coronavirus communication task force, reported on Wednesday. Of the people confirmed positive, 12,162 have been declared cured and discharged.

Ahead of World No Tobacco Day on May 31, health experts have warned that smokers are at a significantly higher risk of complications from the new coronavirus, citing recent studies which point to a 79 percent higher risk of death.
