Ankara says stands by guarantorship system for Cyprus

Turkey on Feb. 11 dismissed claims that it had accepted ending the guarantorship system for Cyprus, under which Turkey stands as a guarantor for the island.

"News reports in the Greek Cypriot press alleging that Turkey has accepted ending the guarantorship system for Cyprus are not true," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hami Aksoy said in a statement.

Some EU countries attempt to mediate in Cyprus, says Özersay

Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Kudret Özersay said on Jan. 21 that some EU countries are attempting to mediate in Cyprus over natural resources.

"Today, EU countries and prominent countries in the past six months are attempting to assume a mediating role between the sides over the natural resources," Özersay said, speaking at the assembly in Turkish Cyprus.

Turkey’s water supply to TRNC suffers disruption

The fresh water supply from Turkey to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has suffered a disruption, Turkey's agriculture and forestry minister said on Jan. 11. 

Bekir Pakdemirli told reporters in Turkey's southern Mersin province that the Turkey-TRNC water pipeline didn't break and that the reason for the disruption has yet to be ascertained.

Akinci says EastMed energy project costly, not conducive to Cyprus settlement

Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci on Thursday criticized the signing of an undersea pipeline by the leaders of Greece, Cyprus and Israel claiming that it makes no economic sense and it would not help to solve the island dispute.
The 1,900-kilometer EastMed pipeline is longer and costlier than other alternatives, Akinci said in a written statement.
