As a new round of negotiations on the resolution of the Cyprus dispute is about to start in Geneva, there are growing voices inside the EU that point out the dangerous possibility Turkey will be able to influence EU policies through the Turkish-Cypriot constituent state after a possible solution.

This is a crucial week for the Cyprus issue. Both the Turkish and Greek sides seem to think that the talks in Geneva are "a last window of opportunity for a solution," but each party is still putting forward terms that the other side obviously cannot accept. Nevertheless, for some time now there has been strong optimism that this "last chance" will bring a solution.

After so many rounds of talks and numerous declarations of great success or announcements of breakthroughs, the Cyprus talks train finally came to a very important station. Some claim this will be a make-or-break event, while some act with awareness of the history of the problem, which is now more than half a century old, and say Geneva is not the end of the road.

The new Cyprus rendezvous in Geneva is in a few days and the sides are undertaking their last preparations for what is claimed to be a make-or-break session.

The parties to the Cyprus dispute have not been able to proceed on four negotiation topics on the issue, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said, adding that the Greek Cypriots had focused on guarantees and security issues, instead of discussing topics on other chapters, before a new round of talks are set to start in Geneva on Jan. 9.

A series of meeting between the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the opposition party leaders will commence in the following days in the light of the upcoming negotiations for the Cyprus dispute in Geneva on the 12th of January.
