Vucic welcomes Zeman in Belgrade

BELGRADE- Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic greeted Czech President Milos Zeman in a ceremony outside Belgrade's Palace of Serbia on Monday.

Zeman, who is on an official visit to Serbia, was given a red carpet and guard of honour welcome as the national anthems of the two countries were being played.

Former NATO general Petr Pavel wins Czech presidential vote

Retired NATO general Petr Pavel defeated a billionaire former prime minister in an election run-off on Saturday to become the fourth president of the Czech Republic.

Pavel, a former paratrooper, won 58.3 percent of votes while Andrej Babis scored 41.7 percent, according to final results published by the Czech Statistical Office.

Zeman to visit Serbia on January 30

PRAGUE - Czech President Milos Zeman will visit Serbia on Monday, January 30, it was announced in Prague on Friday.

The trip to Belgrade will be Zeman's farewell visit at the end of his five-year presidential term.

He is scheduled to meet with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, with whom he will also open the renovated Czech House.

Prebilič collects enough signatures to run for president

Ljubljana – Vladimir Prebilič, a defence expert who is currently serving as Kočevje mayor, has collected enough signatures to submit his candidacy for Slovenian president, he told the press in Ljubljana on Monday. At a joint news conference with Vesna, this non-parliamentary party promoting a green agenda announced its support for Prebilič’s bid.

Presidential election campaign gets going in earnest

Ljubljana – Today is the first day when candidates vying to become Slovenia’s new president in the 23 October election can submit their candidacy, and voters can formally support their candidates with signatures.

The candidates have until 28 September to submit their candidacy with the National Electoral Commission.

In other Czech news, Prague is set to take over the rotating six-month presidency of the EU from France on Friday. This would be the second time Czechia has served as the president of the EU Council since it joined the bloc in 2004. It had been hoping for a smoother ride this time, unlike in 2009 when the government collapsed during its stint, causing its presidency to be judged a disaster.
