Thousands march against planned gold mine in Kaz Mountains
Tens of thousands staged a large protest on the outskirts of a small town in the northwestern province of Çanakkale on Aug. 5. against what they say will be pollution from a foreign-owned gold mine project.
Local gold output may reach 50 tons
Turkey's annual gold production "may easily reach 50 tons within the next two-three years, thanks to new investment projects," the head of the Turkish Gold Miners Association has said.

Greece sets April bid deadline for Hellenic Petroleum stake, workers to strike
Greece has set an April 3 deadline for shortlisted investors to submit binding bids for a majority stake in its biggest oil refiner, Hellenic Petroleum, two sources close to the sale said on Wednesday.
Greece and Paneuropean Oil and Industrial Holdings are jointly selling a 50.1 percent stake in Hellenic.
Two consortia approved for Hellenic Petroleum bids
Greece on Monday approved two consortia to submit final bids for a 50.1 percent stake in its biggest oil refiner Hellenic Petroleum, its privatizations agency said.
The consortia are: Glencore Energy with a unit of the US-based Carlyle Group; and Vitol Holding with Algeria-based Sonatrach.
Glencore and Vitol had already been short-listed last summer.

A firm's plan to extract sand from the sea off the village of Kıyıköy in the northwestern province of Kırklareli has been scrapped, following a report by daily Hürriyet which warned that the mining would cause a "natural disaster."
