Five paintings by British artist Francis Bacon worth an estimated 30 million euros have been stolen from the Madrid home of their owner, El Pais reported March 13.

With an Atlantic tailwind from May auctions in New York, in which the two biggest auction houses sold art pieces totaling more than $2 billion, many eyes are focused on major sales which began this week in London, sales which may see prices soar again to dizzying heights, Reuters has reported.

Picasso painting sells for $179M; Giacometti sculpture $141M

A painting by Pablo Picasso and a sculpture by Alberto Giacometti are the two priciest piecs of painting and sculpting ever sold at an auction.

Christie's auction house is hoping to set new world records with a Picasso valued at $140 million and a Giacometti worth $130 million, as New York's spring auction season kicks off May 5.

Pablo Picasso's colorful "The Women of Algiers (Version 0)," depicting a scene from a harem, will be up for grabs when Christie's puts it on the auction block May 11.
