Environmental Aspect of Cryptocurrencies: Ethereum vs Monero

The climate and energy debate gets more heated every year. So do the criticisms of energy-intensive cryptocurrencies. The Bitcoin network uses more energy than some countries like Argentina (with a population of 45 million). A single BTC transaction emits 300kg of carbon dioxide.  

Bitcoin rose 1.4% on Tuesday, ending the day around $41,300 and remaining near that mark on Wednesday morning. Ethereum added 1.3% to $3080 in the last 24 hours, XRP corrected 0.9% to 0.766, and other top ten altcoins gained 0.7% (BNB) to 4.9% (Terra).

The idea of money has come a long way and has played a part in the development of human history for at least 3,000 years. Humans have moved from the barter system to coins and paper money. Cryptocurrencies are sort of the latest evolution of money and many are starting to catch on.

An observant Twitter user was the first to sound an alarm last month that the source code for the Showtime Anytime website contained a tool that was secretly hijacking visitors’ computers to mine Monero, a Bitcoin–like digital currency focused on anonymity.
