The Zika virus does not pose a serious threat for Turkey due to geographical distance, says the head of the Turkish Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (KLIMIK), Professor Önder Ergönül, while warning that international travel to regions of outbreak risk pregnant women's lives.

The World Health Organization (WHO) readies to meet at a special meeting on Feb. 1 to decide if they should declare an international health emergency for the Zika virus, which is "spreading explosively" in the Americas and could see up to 4 million cases over the next year, international health officials said Jan. 28.

Altagracia Guzman, the Caribbean country's health minister, said lab testing of samples sent to the United States had confirmed Zika in 10 out of 27 suspected cases. 

The situation in Serbia when it comes to the West Nile virus is "absolutely under control," the Clinic for Infective and Tropical Diseases director has said.

Dr. Miomir Pelemis told the state broadcaster RTS on Thursday morning that so far the infection was confirmed only in one patient - and that he died - "but had the most difficult form of the disease." mosquitoes

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) on Wednesday confirmed the first case of West Nile virus in Greece this year.

According to KEELPNO, laboratory tests confirmed that an 85-year-old Greek man has been infected with the virus, which can be fatal.

The man is a resident of Attica and has not traveled to other parts of the country, KEELPNO said.
