Signaling a new wave of upheaval in the ranks of the center-left Movement for Change (KINAL), former socialist culture minister Pavlos Geroulanos on Friday underscored the need for the party to "return to the legacy" of PASOK, from which it was formed, and expressed his interest in assuming its leadership.

Forty-five years since the founding of socialist Pasok, which became the exponent of progressive-democratic politics, it is not the best of times for the party.

Its successor, the Movement for Change, instead of playing a leading role in public life is bedeviled by internal clashes and personal ambitions.

Greek lawmakers on Thursday approved with an overwhelming majority the appointment of Kostas Tasoulas as new Parliament president, in their first vote since the House convened after the July general elections.

The leader of the Union of Centrists, Vasilis Leventis, argued it would be a mistake to grant election front runner Kyriakos Mitsotakis an outright majority in Sunday's general elections, saying his party "stands in the way" of this plan.

Fofi Gennimata, the leader of center-left Movement for Change (KINAL), said a vote in her party would promote political stability, as she cast her ballot at the Athenian district of Aghios Dimitrios on Sunday.

Keeping a balance in Greece's political center can be tricky. On one hand, there are voters who dread the prospect of an unstable government. For them, the center-left Movement for Change (KINAL) alliance needs to provide assurances that it will help form a government if necessary after Sunday's general election.

Centre-left Movement for Change leader Fofi Gennimata has unleashed a frontal attack against main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis over his warning that if New Democracy does not receive a strong mandate in the 7 July general election then the country will be led to a second parliamentary election in August, in the middle of most Greeks' summer vacation.

Opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday underlined the need for a strong mandate from the Greek people if he is to enforce his program "without caveats and differentiations."
