Local man turns wood into models of Aegean city’s historical spots

A 70-year-old local man in the Aegean province of Muğla turns wooden objects into models of historical buildings in his nine-square-meter carpenter workshop.

Retired after working as a carpenter for 55 years in the city, Ali İlhan has set up a workshop on a busy street in Menteşe district.

Greece opens fire at civilian boat in Aegean Sea

Greece opened fire at a boat carrying civilians off the island of Rhodes in the Aegean Sea, said the Turkish Coast Guard Command on Aug. 11. 

In a statement, the command said two Turkish and one Syrian nationals were injured and the boat sank due to the attack.

It said the attack took place 0040GMT in the Greek waters, 7.2 nautical miles from Turkey's Mugla province.

Academics spending more than 30 years in ancient excavation area

When the first excavations in the ancient city of Patara began in 1988, archaeologists and academics were using wheelbarrows to carry their digging items and their findings. Now that they found a trove of ancient relics, they say it's time for conservation.

The excavations have so far trained three professors, two associate professors and three doctors in the Harbor Bath excavations.

Turkey preparing for domestic tourism

Turkey's tourism season is expected to postpone until after-May period due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the country's culture and tourism minister told daily Hürriyet.

"If we don't face new problems in the course of events, domestic [tourism] traffic will start at the end of May. The tourism season will open with controlled domestic flights," said Mehmet Nuri Ersoy on April 25.
