Thessaloniki to offer Christmas tree recycling program

Christmas trees will be recycled after the holiday season as part of a pilot program that will begin in Thessaloniki in northern Greece.

The aim of the initiative by the Environment Ministry and the Solid Waste Management Agency (FODSA) is for other regions across the country to implement the program, whose main slogan is "no Christmas trees at the landfill."

The Center for the preparation of secondary raw materials (the Center) is the most modern sorting plant in this part of Europe and the only one in the region providing purely real recycling. Construction began at the end of August 2017 and the machines were tested for the first time in the middle of May 2018. The Center will be fully operational by the end of June this year.

Ships should not gain any financial advantage by dumping waste at sea. To combat dumping, the Council today adopted a general approach on updated rules on port reception facilities which will provide incentives for ships to dispose of their waste on land.
