Parties not proceeding on four chapters in Cyprus talks: Turkish FM

The parties to the Cyprus dispute have not been able to proceed on four negotiation topics on the issue, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu said, adding that the Greek Cypriots had focused on guarantees and security issues, instead of discussing topics on other chapters, before a new round of talks are set to start in Geneva on Jan. 9.

Akinci insists on Turkish military presence on Cyprus

Expectations of a successful outcome to reunification talks between rival leaders on Cyprus were somewhat dampened on Wednesday after Turkish-Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci reiterated to the Turkish service of the BBC that if Greece and Cyprus insist on a settlement which includes "no guarantees and no armies," then "negotiations will end before they even begin."

Akinci remarks rankle Nicosia

Nicosia insisted on Tuesday that the Republic of Cyprus will not be dissolved to make way for a federation with constituent Greek and Turkish states, and that the multilateral summit in Geneva, slated for January 12, that will seek to seal a reunification deal must include the participation of the permanent members of the UN Security Council to ensure its successful outcome.

Athens insists meeting between PM and Erdogan must precede final Cyprus summit

The government repeated Tuesday that it believes a meeting between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is a "necessary precondition" before a multilateral final summit, scheduled for January 12 in Geneva, about Cyprus can go ahead.

Election, referendum or both?

It is not yet certain when the two people of Cyprus will be asked to go to separate simultaneous referenda to vote on an agreement uniting the divided island in a bi-zonal and bi-communal federation. Indeed, as for now, it is not certain either if there ever will be an accord to crown the almost 50 years of intercommunal talks.
