Police remand 9 in fear of violent Golden Dawn anniversary riots

Nine individuals were taken into police custody on Wednesday at Neo Iraklio, Attica as a precaution against violent riots given the 10th anniversary of the murder of two members of the far-right party Golden Dawn. 

Despite a ban on gatherings that is in force until 6 a.m. on Thursday, a large number of people have gathered in the areas of Neo Iraklio and Nea Ionia. 

Restaurants targeted in northern Athens

Explosive devices were detonated early Saturday at two restaurants with the same name in Maroussi and Nea Ionia in northern Athens, police said.

An explosive device detonated shortly after 4.30 a.m. at a souvlaki restaurant located at the junction of Aigaiou and Vyronos streets in Maroussi. The explosion broke the glass of the shop and damaged the tables and chairs.

Teenagers arrested for fan-related assault

Three teenagers arrested in Athens have appeared before a prosecutor to answer charges that they attacked and robbed two 14-year-old boys who supported a rival football team in the Nea Ionia district.

Police allege that the trio, aged 14, 16 and 19, contacted the targets of the assault via social media by pretending to be supporters of the same football team.

ND’s Mitsotakis back on the road, as party leaders tread the campaign trail

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis resumed his pre-election campaign tour on Tuesday, after testing negative for Covid. Mitsotakis posted a photo on his personal Instagram account with the negative test result, calling it "The good news of the day."

He had tested positive for the virus on Friday and had to cancel several events, including a planned trip to Mount Athos.

Suspect in plumber’s murder arrested in Athens

Police on Monday announced the arrest of one of the fugitives accused of the murder of a 39-year-old plumber in a cafe in Nea Ionia in northern Athens last February.

The suspect, 23, was located at 12.30 p.m. on Monday. An arrest warrant had been pending against him, as well as against six other people, on charges of manslaughter with intent by the Athens District Attorney's Office.

Police precinct in northern Athens targeted with petrol bombs

Unidentified assailants attacked the Nea Ionia police precinct in northern Athens with Molotov cocktails early Monday morning.
According to the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the incident occurred at 4 a.m. when a group of about 10 people approached the police station at the junction of Irakleiou Avenue and Kosta Varnali Street and threw four Molotov cocktails.

Group claims responsibility for arson attacks

Α group calling itself Mayhem Squads has claimed responsibility for a barrage of arson attacks involving gas canisters around Athens in the early hours of last Tuesday.
Targets included the Alimos marina, a private security company vehicle stationed in Peristeri, a cafe owned by a New Democracy candidate in Kifissia, and the residence of a police reporter in Nea Ionia.
