Two briefly detained for putting up illegal flyposters

Police briefly detained two people for putting up flyposters advertising a speech of main opposition leader Alexis Tsipras on a main avenue in Athens without a legal permit.

The two individuals, identified as foreign nationals, were placing the posters on street lamps near the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center on Syngrou Avenue, police said.

Man arrested over fraud convictions, pending arrest warrant

Officers arrested a 54-year-old man in the Athenian suburb of Nea Smyrni on Wednesday afternoon after they determined that an arrest warrant for fraud and forgery was pending against him.

The suspect, who was identified as a member of a family involved in shipping, had also been convicted to a total of 33 years in jail for the same offenses.

Power outage in western Athens

Several districts of the Greek capital were left without electricity on Tuesday afternoon after a breakdown at a public power utility's (PPC) high-voltage substation in Rouf.
The areas affected include Rouf, Korydallos, Egaleo and Nea Smyrni.

Power is expected to be restored soon, according to SKAI TV.

Cars torched in spree of arson attacks

Police in Attica were on Sunday seeking the perpetrators behind arson attacks on four parked cars and a motorcycle in different parts of the greater Athens area.
The vehicles targeted were in the city center and the suburbs of Nea Smyrni and Vari between 1.20 a.m. and 3.30 a.m.
The motive behind the attacks was unclear. 

Police end hours-long hostage standoff in southern Athens

A police EKAM unit stormed an apartment in the southern Athenian suburb of Nea Smyrni early Thursday morning ending a hostage situation involving a 35-year-old man who held his father at knife-point for 16 hours.
During the raid, the suspect inflicted light wounds on his father's hands before being arrested. The victim was transferred to Elpis hospital for precautionary reasons.
