Tax offices in major cities to be trimmed down

The Independent Authority of Public Revenues is planning to reduce the number of tax offices operating in Attica, Thessaloniki and Patra with a series of mergers.

The total number of tax offices around the country will be trimmed down from 115 to 97, while the 289 surplus employees arising from the scheme will be absorbed into the agency's auditing service.

Anarchists target supermarket chain

Extensive damage was reported in the early hours of Christmas Day at several supermarkets of the "Market In" chain in Attica following attacks by a self-styled anarchist group.

Man kills himself and his two children with house fire

A man and his two children died in a fire he started in the apartment where they lived in the Athens suburb of Nea Smyrni on Saturday morning, in what appeared to be a murder-suicide.

The 40-year-old air force officer left a suicide note that read: "I don't know what to do with my life. I can't take it anymore."

Unregistered properties to be confiscated

The state is set to become the legal owner of properties in 111 areas around the country (including 20 in Athens and Thessaloniki) whose real owners have not declared their assets to the land registry offices (Ktimatologio) that are about to complete 14 years of operation, according to the head of the property owners federation (POMIDA).

Police arrest 17 in brothel crackdown in Athens

A crackdown on seven brothels in the Athens neighborhoods of Kallithea and Nea Smyrni Thursday led to 17 people facing a prosecutor for soliciting, 16 women and one man.

Of the 16 women arrested, 11 are foreign nationals, according to police who confiscated cash, five surveillance cameras and one recording device in the sweep.

GYMNASTICS: Olympian Lefteris Petrounias made it six out of six this year in the rings winning at the Challenge Cup in Paris with what he claimed was a performance equal to what gave him the gold medal at the  Rio de Janeiro Olympics last year. He has remained unbeaten since and is the favorite for gold in the upcoming World Championship.
