Ex-President Iliescu leaves Attorney General's Office after being informed he is subject of criminal investigation
Ex-President Ion Iliescu on Tuesday left the Attorney General's Office after about an hour and 30 minutes without making statements to the press. He had been summoned to be informed that he is a subject in criminal investigation of the December 1989 Revolution, standing accused of crimes against humanity.
Romania's Ex-President Faces Trial Over 1989 Bloodshed
Romania's Attorney General Augustin Lazar on Monday said that he had requested official permission from the president to prosecute former president Ion Iliescu and former Prime Minister Petre Roman for crimes against humanity in the 1989 revolution. Former deputy prime minister Gelu Voican Voiculescu is also set to be prosecuted.

Nobel Literature Laureate Herta Muller has been invited by Athens's Goethe Institute to attend the Greek premiere of the poignant 2015 documentary on her turbulent life as a member of Romania's German-speaking minority during the Ceausescu regime. "The Alphabet of Fear" (in German with Greek subtitles) by John Albert Jansen, will be screened on Wednesday, March 21, starting at 8.30 p.m.

Mass protests force Romania to scrap decree decriminalizing graft
Romania's prime minister said on Feb. 4 he was scrapping a decree that would have shielded dozens of politicians from prosecution for corruption, bowing to one of the biggest protests since the fall of Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989.
Romania Jails Former Gulag Boss For 20 Years
A Romanian court on Wednesday sentenced former jail commander Ioan Ficior to 20 years in prison for the deaths of 103 political prisoners during the Communist regime.
He has 10 days to appeal.
This was the second trial of a head of a Communist-era lockup in Romania since dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was tried and executed in 1989.

Romania Jails Communist-Era Prison Boss
Romania's high court of cassation and justice on Wednesday upheld a 20-year prison sentence for Alexandru Visinescu, a former prison commander accused of aggravated murder in the deaths of at least 12 political prisoners during the Communist regime
This was the first trial of a head of a Communist-era lockup in Romania since dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was tried and executed in 1989.
