Cunda Island, a natural protected area, has been declared as a "sensitive area to be strictly protected" after reevaluation of its status, according to the decision published in the Official Gazette on April 13.

Greece and Turkey will have the opportunity to reassess what unites them after the elections that are scheduled to take place in both countries in May, Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said on Friday, during a visit to the island of Imvros in Turkey.

The minister is scheduled to visit the Metropolitan Church of Imvros & Tenedos upon his arrival, before going to the village of Agoi Theodoroi where he will meet with Greek expatriates.

Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew and Greece's Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Katsaniotis attended a mass held in the Church of St. Trifonos on the Gökçeada (Imbros) island of the northwestern province of Çanakkale on Feb. 1.

The church, located on Turkey's biggest island and which is also Bartholomew's homeland, was restored and opened to worship on Aug. 9, 2021, after 55 years.

Islanders strongly react to a decision that paves the way for construction at Yıldızkoy [Star Bay], a secluded bay area located within the boundaries of the National Underwater Park in Turkey's largest Gökçeada (Imbros) island.

The "Balıkesir-Çanakkale Landscaping Plan" ratified in the municipal council on Oct. 4 allows building settlements on the bay.

Turkey will deliver icons stolen from historical local churches to Istanbul's Fener Greek Patriarch Bartholomew, the government said on Aug. 9.

Marine mucilage, which has been plaguing the Marmara Sea over the recent months, has also been observed in the northern Aegean Sea, especially around Gökçeada and Bozcaada, two islands off the shores of the northwestern province of Çanakkale.

Gökçeada, the world's first Cittaslow island, in the western province of Çanakkale is preparing to welcome visitors this summer.

Located in the westernmost point of the country and formerly known as Imbros, the 279-kilometers-square Gökçeada is also Turkey's largest island. It has always been one of the most well-known tourist attractions for both local and international travelers.
