The news reports about Samothraki, the northern Aegean island which was disconnected from the mainland following the breakdown this month of two passenger ferries, did not come like a bolt from the blue.

Migrant arrivals on Greece's northeastern Aegean islands have picked up as hundreds of asylum seekers are attempting to cross the sea from Turkey and reach the European Union on a daily basis.

In the wake of the disruption caused by the breakdown this month of two passenger ferries serving the northern Aegean island of Samothraki, the government on Monday announced a series of measures to improve connections to the island, modernize its port and complete stalled infrastructure projects.

Half the bookings made at the northern Aegean island of Samothraki have been cancelled as a result of the problems with ferry connections which left hundreds of tourists stranded for days, the mayor said Thursday.

Turkish ink drawing artist Pınar Tınç opens April 27 her new exhibition 'Innocence' at Arnavutköy Art Gallery in Istanbul.
