Mayors to petition PM over migration

Following a day of protests on Lesvos, Chios and Samos against the mounting pressure of irregular migration on the islands, the regional governor for the Northern Aegean, Kostas Moutzouris, and the mayors of the three islands are due in Athens on Thursday to deliver a petition to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis calling for a swift resolution to the problem. 

Islanders protest against overcrowding in migrant camps, slow processing

Residents of the islands of Lesvos, Chios and Samos on Wednesday held public protests against what they said is the negative impact of the migration crisis on their communities and on North Aegean islands at large, which is home to the most congested reception and identification facilities - also known as hotspots.

Teen in critical condition after being stabbed inside Lesvos migrant center

A teenager from Afghanistan was in serious condition on Monday after being stabbed inside the migrant identification center of Moria in Lesvos.

According to initial information, the 17-year-old was stabbed in the chest and abdomen by a 20-year-old fellow Afghani. The victim is being treated in the hospital of Mytilene, while the suspect was arrested.

Man arrested over killing of migrant in Moria

Police on Friday arrested a 27-year-old foreign national in connection with the deadly stabbing of a 20-year-old Yemeni migrant during an altercation at the overcrowded Moria refugee camp on the eastern Aegean island of Lesvos on Thursday night. 
The suspect is said to have stabbed the victim in several parts of his body and then fled the scene.

Religious icons shot on Thasos island

Church authorities on the northern Aegean island of Thasos have ordered locks to be placed on two chapels after a man opened fire on their icons, depicting Jesus and the Virgin Mary, with an air gun.

The vandalism was discovered on the Epiphany holiday last Monday by shocked worshippers who visited the chapels of Agia Marina and Agios Vasileios outside the island capital of Limena.

Greece Shuts Down its Three Largest Migrant Camps

Greece will shut down its largest three migrant camps on islands facing Turkey, and replace them with new facilities, AFP reported, citing officials.
The Greek government said it would close existing, overcrowded camps on the islands of Lesbos, Chios and Samos, and replace them with new closed facilities with a capacity of at least 5,000 people each.
